
Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, MD, FAAFP, is President of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke University School of Medicine (USA). An Argentine family doctor, educator, and global leader in primary health care, she has dedicated her career to advancing health equity, people-centered care, and the strengthening of family medicine worldwide.
Dr. Martínez-Bianchi earned her medical degree from the National University of Rosario in Argentina and completed her family medicine residency at the University of Iowa, where she later served as Chief Resident. Her career spans rural practice, urban care, and academic leadership. At Duke, she directed the Family Medicine Residency Program for 15 years before transitioning to her current equity-focused role.
Globally, she has represented family doctors at the United Nations, World Health Organization, and OECD PaRIS Initiative, and in 2023 was appointed by the President of the United States to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition.
She co-founded LATIN-19, an award-winning immigrant health equity coalition, and continues practicing full-spectrum ambulatory family medicine with interests in women’s health, dermatology, urology, mental health, and newborn care. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
She is co-founder of LATIN-19, an award-winning model for immigrant health equity, and co-PI of FIEL-NC, a statewide initiative improving health insurance literacy in Latino communities. Her honors include North Carolina Family Doctor of the Year, the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, the FHLI Community Achievement Award, and induction into the NC Institute of Medicine.
