He was born in Ankara. After completing his primary, secondary and high school education at TED Ankara College, he entered Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 1982. Between 1982 and 1984, he worked as Chief Physician at Sivas Hafik Health Center and Sivas Central Tuberculosis Dispensary.
After receiving his specialization training at Hacettepe Medical Faculty, Department of Neurology between 1984 and 1990, he completed his postdoctoral studies at the Ohio State University Department of Neurology for 2 years. He received the title of Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor in 1999.
He has more than 200 international publications and has received over 2000 citations.
He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, Peripheral Nerve Society, World Muscle Society and Turkish Neurology Association.
